Understanding CO2 Laser Treatment: What Skin Tones Are Best Suited?
CO2 Laser is an excellent choice for those wanting to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin discoloration, and enhance overall skin texture. However, it’s essential to know that this treatment isn’t for everyone. Read our blog to learn what skin tones are best suited for CO2 Laser, and schedule a consultation with our board-certified surgeon today.
Candidates for CO2 Laser
The most suitable candidates for CO2 Laser are individuals with a lower risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation side effects. Lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick scale types I to III) are particularly well-suited for CO2 treatments, as these skin types absorb less laser energy and have a reduced risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation problems.
The Fitzpatrick Scale

But what exactly is the Fitzpatrick Scale? Developed by American dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in 1975, this classification system categorizes skin tones into six levels, ranging from Type I (very fair) to Type VI (deeply pigmented dark brown).
For CO2 Laser treatments, Fitzpatrick types I to III are generally the safest to treat. Type IV can also be treated with some pre-treatment measures, such as lightening creams or adjusted lower laser settings. However, Types IV to VI pose a higher risk for pigment changes post-treatment and are typically not recommended for CO2 Laser. Alternatives like microneedling or chemical peels may be better suited for these skin types.
