PRP- Micro-needling

Also known as “PRP”

Platelet Rich Plasma is an intervention that has been used in medicine for several years. Traditionally it is has been used to accelerate wound healing; repair tendons, ligaments and joint damage, heal diabetic ulcers, and help re-grow muscle and bone. This rich extract of your own blood contains fragments of cells that are full of platelets, growth factors, and active proteins. These growth factors are known to stimulate the regenerative capacities of our own cells. When injecting this concentrated supply of plasma into our face, it stimulates the native cells in our body and tells them to regenerate.

The healing properties of the blood components in PRP can be used as a regenerative cosmetic skin and facial treatment for the following:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Tighten and tone skin
  • Repair mild collagen loss and volume loss
  • Improve Crow’s feet and dark under eye circles
  • Soften Acne Scarring
  • Minimize Rosacea

Prior to the Cosmetic PRP procedure, a consultation with Dr. Perez is done to assess cosmetic needs and determine the best combination of treatments to achieve the desired result.

A typical PRP procedure usually takes 45 minutes. We start with obtaining a vial of blood from the patient, usually from a vein in the arm.

prp-slider[1]This blood will be centrifuged at a specific RPM in a medicated tube. This processing separates the platelet rich plasma from the rest of the blood, leaving a concentrated platelet count with growth factors and active proteins. Once the plasma portion of the blood is drawn into the test tube, it is mixed with a calcium preservative, forming a gel that will become the injection material. Because the PRP is extracted from your own blood, there is no risk of disease transmission, allergic or immune reaction.

After numbing the area being treated with a local anesthetic injection or topical numbing cream, the PRP is injected into the face with a fine needle in a similar fashion as a dermal filler.

This injected volume will slowly disappear within the next couple of weeks but the cells in those areas will be stimulated to form new collagen and also regenerate the skin in the next 1 to 3 months.

Over the weeks and months following the treatment, this stem cell response recruits collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts.

The fibroblasts replace tissue that has been damaged or lost through the aging process, with healthy skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated.  Because of the need of time to see an improvement in the injected areas, we recommend the injection of a hyaluronic acid dermal filler at the same time. This combination is what some providers call a “vampire facelift”.

To obtain a better stimulus we recommended a second injection of PRP four to six weeks after the first.

This procedure is minimally invasive, however its downtime is somewhat in between treatment with traditional fillers and the fat grafting procedure.

As with any plastic surgical procedure, we recommend the patient to be off any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin or ibuprofen for at least seven days before receiving any injections. This will limit the amount of bruising and risks for hematomas.

The importance of seeing a proper training provider for this kind of procedure assures you the best possible results.

There are many injectors without the proper training and the resources to solve any possible side effects of this type of procedures.  When you looking for a provider you need to look for the board certification credentials including membership to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Eclipse Micro-needling

Mechanical Micro-needling is an innovated medical aesthetic procedure to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, skin’s texture and tone. During the procedure tiny needles are used to create micro injuries to the skin in order to trigger new collagen synthesis and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker epidermis with a softer appearance on wrinkles, scars and overall texture.

Automated micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels which can be used with topical gels and even PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) to give the patient a step up to their micro-needling treatment.

 Benefits:

  • Minimal downtime
  • Safe for all Skin Types
  • Natural Results
  • Effective
  • Affordable

How is the procedure done?

When you come in for your treatment we will apply numbing cream (10-15mins). A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the Eclipse Micropen. Next in a single motion the pen will be pressed gently against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What Does It Feel Like?

The feeling associated with micro-needling is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable. The patient will also have a topical numbing cream on the face before the treatment.

Who is a good candidate for micro-needling?

Good candidates for this treatment include patients that want to see improvement in acne scaring/pitting. Also for fine lines, facial scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance.

What’s the down time?

Immediately after the treatment you will notice redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the micro-needling setting used and the number of overlapping passes. On average, patients are red up to 2 to 4 days. Many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.

What should I avoid before doing a micro-needling treatment?

Discontinue using Auto-Immune therapies, Retin-A 24 hours before treatment. Patient with facial outbreaks such as herpes must take medication 48 hours after micro-needling treatment. Also avoiding the sun pre and post treatment is very important.

When Will I See The Results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Depends on the skin condition the patient has and what they want to achieve with their micro-needling treatments. Some patients will require a single treatment, for a more smooth, refresh skin. However, patients with deep wrinkles or acne scars are recommended to receive a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart.
