Eyelid Lift Surgery

Also known as “Blepharoplasty”

What is an Eyelid Lift?

An Eyelid Lift surgery (Medical term: “blepharoplasty“) is the surgical procedure used to remove the excess skin, excess fat and sometimes part of the muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This Eyelid Lift surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags around your eyes giving you a more youthful appearance.  Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a facelift or a brow lift. The scars for this Eyelid Lift plastic surgery are easily hidden along the naturally occurring creases in the upper and lower eyelids.

The Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Perez will discuss your physical signs and your goals, answer any questions or concerns you may have and together decide which procedure or combination of procedures is the best option for you.

Dr Perez is one of the most experienced eyelid surgeons in the Kansas City area. He performs more than 50 bilateral Eyelid Lift surgery procedures annually.  Dr. Perez is involved with the teaching of plastic surgery residents the art of eyelid surgery at the VA Medical Center in Kansas City, MO as well as being a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Dept of Plastic Surgery at KU Med Center.

The Surgery

An Eyelid Lift surgery may be performed in our Overland Park Kansas office under local anesthesia and oral sedation for patients who are candidates. These patients will be awake during the surgery, but relaxed and insensitive to pain.  Patients who are not candidates for in office surgery will be scheduled at an accredited outpatient surgery center and under-go general anesthesia provided by a board certified anesthesiologist.  In this case, the patient will be asleep through the operation.

Blepharoplasty usually takes one to three hours depending on the extent of the surgery. As with any surgery, this surgery has a small chance of complications.  Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is the best way to minimize any potential for complications.

Remember there are at least three surgical specialties which can perform these procedures (ENT, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery).  It is important to know that the only Board in Plastic Surgery recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties is The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Before any surgery you will have to stop any aspirin or drugs that may thin your blood or effect your clotting time such as (NSAID’s).  You also will stop taking any over the counter or herbal medications such as Vitamin E, Omega 3 Fatty Acids (fish oil) and any herbal medication due to the increased chances of bleeding and bruising.

The Recovery

After surgery, you will be instructed to keep your head elevated for several days and to use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising.  After 3 days, you may alternate the use of cold compresses and hot compresses.  Natural Tears eye drops should be used several times a day to help relieve dry and itching eyes that can occur during the healing process.

Dr Perez will follow your progress very closely for the first week or two. The stitches in the upper eyelid will be removed five days to one week after surgery. Expect to keep your activities to a minimum for three to five days, and continue to avoid more strenuous activities for about three weeks.

With an Eyelid Lift surgery (upper and lower blepharoplasties) you can achieve significant aesthetic improvement in the eye region and enjoy a more youthful and relaxed appearance. Please take a look at our gallery.
