Spider Vein Treatment

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are superficial veins of red, blue, or purple in color that can appear as a star shaped pattern of clusters or as branches of fine lines. Most commonly found in the legs and face, these veins are harmless and are not associated with symptoms, however the condition can be a major source of embarrassment for many females. Spider veins are not to be confused with Varicose Veins, which are larger twisted appearing veins that require a different treatment modality.

When to consider treatment

There is no cure for spider veins. Heredity and lifestyle play a role. The use of support stockings and maintaining a healthy weight can protect you against developing them. For those that struggle with spider veins, reasons to seek laser treatment include:

  • Inability to conceal branching patterns on your face with makeup
  • Are self conscious wearing shorts and bathing suits due to their visibility on calves, ankles, and thighs
  • When you feel that they present as a “sign of aging” that you would like to eliminate.
  • Most candidates are those that are in good health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations.

The Treatment

Spider vein treatments are a quick, safe, and effective treatment with minimal side effects.  Using the Deka ND YAG laser attachment, a precise beam of light is targeted to the spider vein. As the vein’s pigment color attracts the laser beam, the laser heats up the small vein, collapsing it and destroying it without injuring any nearby structures. Most treatments take up to 45 minutes to complete, however this varies due to the surface area being treated.  Ice and a topical numbing cream may be used to promote patient comfort during the treatment, however most patients tolerate the treatment well. Although side effects are rare, as with any laser treatment the risk of skin blistering, skin breakdown, and skin discoloration can occur.

The Results

Patients report an overall improvement in the appearance of the treatment area and can immediately resume work and almost all normal activities.  The use of support stockings may be used to help apply pressure and decrease bruising.  It must be noted that multiple treatments may be needed in some patients with extensive spider veins.

Also known as “IPL” or “Intense Pulsed Light Therapy” or “Photofacial”

Intense pulsed light is a non-ablative laser treatment that treats a wide range of skin conditions.

These include:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • persistent red complexion
  • sun spots
  • acne scars
  • large pores and other blemishes

Using the Deka FT hand piece, the intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched.  Deka also has incorporated an integrated cooling device into the hand piece of this treatment allowing for increased patient comfort during the treatments.  Using different filter head attachments, the aesthetician can select the appropriate treatment wavelength for the various types of skin care conditions.

Most treatment sessions take 30 to 45 minutes with no recovery time.
Patients can resume their normal skin care routine and return to work the same day. Unlike laser or radiofrequency resurfacing which both require topical anesthetic, IPL treatments causes little to no pain.  It must be noted, however, that since there is little damage to the skin surface, several treatments may be required to see the desired effect. For best results, it is recommended that 4-6 treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart, be performed. Side effects can include transient redness and increased or decreased pigment in the treated area. Minimizing sun exposure can reduce these side effects.

Laser Hair Reduction

One of the most common procedures performed in the US today.

Laser Hair Removal is a noninvasive procedure to reduce or remove unwanted body or facial hair.  Multiple treatments are usually required, commonly between 3 to 8 sessions.  Age, ethnicity, medications, hormone levels and body area will effect the color, thickness, and length of the hair, which in turn will affect the efficacy of the laser treatment.

The color of the hair will attract the laser energy. Because of this, patients with dark hair and light skin will be the best candidates for this procedure.  Patients with no hair color, or very fine hair will usually not respond well.  Patients with dark skin may have more side effects.

How laser hair reduction works

At any given time, the hair follicles will be at different stages of growth.  Only the hair growing in the active growth stage with color in the shaft, will respond.  Normal hair growth cycles last from 3 to 6 weeks. This is the reason why the hair removal sessions are scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Some patients may respond very well, others may need additional maintenance sessions every year for optimal results.

In preparation for the procedure the patient needs to shave the area the day of or the day before the treatment. (This will decrease the risks of burn to the surface of the skin). Patients will also need to avoid sun exposure immediately prior and after the procedure. Patients will need moisturizers and sunscreen lotions as well.

As with any laser treatment the main side effects can be:  skin blistering, changes in the color of the skin, lack of permanent hair removal and burns.

CO2 Fractionated Laser Skin Resurfacing/DOT Therapy

pr-smartxide-CO2-surgery[1]Do you suffer from sun damage, acne scars, brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles or struggle with skin laxity and texture problems? Then the DOT SmartXide C02 Laser Skin Resurfacing may be for you.

This CO2 laser is the gold standard for laser skin resurfacing  treating the effects of facial skin aging and promoting skin rejuvenation.

With this latest laser technology, the DOT SmartXide CO2 Fractionated Laser offers many of the benefits of the traditional CO2 laser with a fraction of the downtime.  Before DOT, many patients endured long, often painful laser resurfacing procedures with lengthy recoveries in order to achieve skin rejuvenation. Historically, many procedures involved vaporizing an entire layer and surface of skin, resulting in significant downtime, discomfort and prolonged redness. In addition, old CO² lasers could not treat non-facial areas like the neck and décolletage easily because skin in these areas did not heal as well as the face.

How is DOT Therapy different or better?

The DOT utilizes a ‘dot’ pattern to create thousands of microscopic perforations in the skin while leaving the areas around each ‘dot’ intact. This fractional laser allows for the skin to heal more quickly from the edge of these tiny ‘dots’. The overall procedure is safer, faster and more efficient than traditional CO2. Doctors also have more control to customize treatment specifically to the patient and even modify treatment during the procedure for various skin challenges or problem areas.

One of the main reasons for success of this system is that the treatment encourages the formation of new collagen, which leads to an inner tightening in the skin. While typical results are evident immediately, most patients see improved results over the next three to five months. The downtime of the DOT CO2 treatment is generally three to seven days after a single treatment, depending on the level of energy used. The procedure, which generally takes less than an hour, is usually performed with a topical anesthetic, or a mild oral sedative to make the patient more comfortable.

Benefits of a CO2 Treatment

The benefits of the SmartXide Dot C02 Laser is that there is minimal downtime and rapid healing. This quick procedure has low risks and accurate results, and treatments can be customized to the patients needs and desired recovery time.

Patients who have spent years in the sun can reverse the appearance of aged and sun damaged skin. Those seeking skin rejuvenation will find improvement in texture and firmness of the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles can be smoothed.  Many acne patients can reduce the appearance of acne, actinic keratosis, and other scars.

Some of the most common treatment areas include:

  • Full face
  • Around the mouth
  • Neck
  • Décolletage
  • Back of the hands
  • Eyelids (Madonna Lift)
  • Unsightly scars

Depending on the areas treated and the depth of treatment,  downtimes can vary significantly from slight redness for about 24 hours to redness that lasts up to two weeks. Most patients will see improvement with one treatment, however Dr. Perez recommends a series of treatments 4 to 6 months apart for best results. Those who suffer from significant skin damage may need more than one treatment or series of treatments to achieve their desired results.

The Results

As with any skin rejuvenation procedure, best results are obtained by using skin care products containing Hydroquinone and a Retinoid before and after the treatment. Take a look at our before and after section.
