Tummy Tuck

Also known as “Abdominoplasty”

Many times as the result of significant weight loss or pregnancy, women, and increasingly men alike, seek a solution for a flatter and firmer stomach.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. This procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of the abdomen, resulting in a flatter and more toned stomach.

As a result from this surgery, you will have a scar at the pubic level and a smaller scar around the belly button, the latter one is the most visible. We find that patients are so pleased with the way their clothes fit and the placement of the incision, the scar becomes of minimal concern. Please take a look at our before and after gallery. It is important to compare Dr Perez’s results to those of other surgeons. Dr Perez has developed and perfected a technique of umbilicoplasty, which will give you the best possible result with a natural look.

Who is a candidate?

The best candidates for a Tummy Tuck are men or women who are in relatively good shape but have loose abdominal skin with or without fat deposits in the abdomen that don’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women whom, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin. If you intend to lose a lot of weight, you should postpone the surgery until after that goal is obtained. Women who plan future pregnancies should wait, as most likely pregnancy will alter the abdominoplasty results. Prior abdominal surgery may preclude you from having a standard abdominoplasty.

The Consultation

In your initial consultation at our Overland Park office, Dr Perez will evaluate your health, determine the extent of fat deposits in your abdominal region, and carefully assess your skin tone. Dr Perez will be realistic with you, describing your alternatives and the risks and limitations of each.

The Surgery

The Tummy Tuck surgery is performed in an accredited outpatient surgical facility in  Overland Park. You will have general anesthesia administered by a Board Certified anesthesiologist, so you’ll sleep through the operation. Dr Perez will inject long acting local anesthetic in your surgical area; this will help with the immediate postoperative discomfort. Pain pumps are available if requested.

A Tummy Tuck usually takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of work required. This surgery involves removal of approximately half of the abdominal skin (see the diagram below).  The abdominal muscle fascia will be tightened in the midline and also in the lateral oblique area.  Dr. Perez believes that liposuction of the flanks or upper abdomen gives much better results if performed at a later date.

The Recovery

For the first few days after your Tummy Tuck surgery, your abdomen will probably be swollen and you’re likely to feel some pain and discomfort, which will be controlled by oral narcotic pain medication and often times muscle relaxants.

After surgery patients must limit their activity but it is important for patients to ambulate as soon as possible.  Most Tummy Tuck patients will have to walk leaning forward during the postoperative period due to the tight closure of the abdominal area. It usually takes about 7 to 14 days for patients to be able to walk upright, however this varies and Dr. Perez will communicate with you about when he thinks you are ready.

Expect to have a drain that you will be instructed on emptying and recording the output.  This drain helps to facilitate the healing process and is usually removed on the first postoperative visit.  Additionally Tummy Tuck patients will wear a snug surgical compression garment to hold and give support to the abdominal area.  This garment is used for 2 weeks or longer.

Once the drain and any sutures are removed Dr. Perez will apply paper tape to the abdominal scar to assure the best possible healing of the scar.  This will be changed at intervals but most likely have to be worn for about 4 weeks after surgery.  This tape applies a light pressure and facilitates the scar to heal in the best way possible.

When the patient is ready, Dr. Perez will instruct the patient on silicone gel scar cream and massage as the scar begins to mature, a process that can take from 6 to 12 months.

Most Tummy Tuck patients can expect no heavy lifting or exercise for three weeks. However, Dr. Perez will be closely monitoring you at each visit and let you know when you are able to increase activity or return to work.  Vigorous exercise, however, should be avoided until you can do it comfortably.
